SAVANNAH – Louis Cannarella "Buddy" Mathews, Jr., 72, died after a long illness at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Buddy was born and raised in Savannah. He attended Blessed Sacrament School and graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1953. He attended Springhill College and Armstrong State College. Buddy owned and operated Louis C. Mathews Seafood in Savannah for forty-five years. He served in the Georgia Air National Guard, was a member of the 4th Degree of the Immaculate Conception Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Hibernian Society of Savannah, and a volunteer of the Social Apostolate. Buddy was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church for twenty-two years. He was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Elizabeth Mathews.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Broderick Mathews, daughter, Jude E. Mathews of Boston, Massachusetts, three sons, Louis C. Mathews, III Michael of Savannah, John P. Mathews Karrie of Pasadena, California, Christopher B. Mathews of Cleveland, Georgia; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters, Angela M. Piper Dave of Atlanta, Joan J. Heyward Thomas, deceased of Bluffton, S.C., Patricia M. Giorgio Doug of Savannah, and Nena M. Schivera Bob of Savannah.
Active pallbearers: Donald J. Barras, Thomas M. Buttimer, Sr., James A. Daly, Jr., John H. Daniels, Jr., Norman J. Dolgoff, Joseph K. Ebberwein, Roy C. Gillikin, Theodore F. Haviland, Jr., Dr. J. Robert Logan, William G. Logan, Dr. Neal M. Markowitz, and Byron A. Stephens.
Honorary Pallbearers: Members of the Benedictine Military Class of 1953, and members of The Hibernian Society of Savannah.
The family wishes to give special thanks to his loving care givers: Beth Conaway, RN, Hospice Savannah, John O'Neil, Patsy Johnson, Maria Pizarro, Olivia Frazier, and Kevin Bland.
Visitation at 6:00 pm and Rosary at 7:00 pm at St. James Catholic Church on Thursday May 29th, 2008.
Funeral Mass Friday, May 30, at 2:00 pm at St. James Catholic Church.
Remembrances may be made to Hospice House of Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416, Carmelite Monastery of Savannah, 11 West Back St., Savannah, GA 31419, Benedictine Military School or St. Vincent's Academy.
